Welcome to ART 8 at GLMS! Here you find all the goings on in the ART 8 program. ART 8 students get to do the coolest of the cool projects, being the upper classmen of the school. Check back to see intricate 2D pieces and some mind blowing 3D works throughout the year!
ART 8 is diving into the Cubist world of Pablo Picasso for the next couple weeks! As an end project, students will complete a self portrait painting in Picasso's signature portrait style. To begin, we has a discussion about Cubism as students debated images on a Powerpoint presentation. I got alot of "What is that?!" "That is supposed to be a flattering portrait?!!" and " I don't get it!" but in the end, they could see and appreciate the change in art, the concept and had fun playing Roll-A-Picasso. Next we moved on to coloring portraits of each other. Students did their best to make their "worst" portraits of classmates! Each student turned in 2, will chose their favorite for the class to vote on and the top 3 Picasso apprentices will receive a yummy prize! Take a look at our final project below! Day one: Powerpoint intro and roll-a-picassoBelow is my PPT for introducing Cubism. I tend to make my PPTs very vague with little info actually typed out. I want my students to debate the art, come to their own conclusions, and use the information about the history of the art world to appreciate the various movements. I guide discussion but it is a very informal approach with much debate and opinion.
Day two: partner portraits!Students created portraits of classmates, and even me using Picasso's signature style. We had a ton of fun making our "best" portraits of our friends. Monday we will vote for our top 3. As you can see we had a ton of fun with this! day three: picking our top 3 & selfie sketches!and the winners are...1st: Jolee 2nd: Michael 3rd: Sydeny and Rylie Click on the images to see the full picture. day four through .....: final selfie sketches and paint!

Lichtenstein and Pop Art go hand in hand. With his comic book benday dot style and his sarcastic soap opera-esque characters and plots, he was and still is considered a leading artist of the Pop Art movement. Our ART 8 students got to recreate Lichtenstein's comic book style in our first graded project: Lichtenstein Self Portraits. For this project, each student was photographed, did a graphite transfer of their image and then filled it with bold black line, benday dots and topped it off with a speech or thought bubble. famous works of roy lichtensteinlichtenstein self portrait processdays one and two: graphite transfers, lines and adding detaildays two and three: tracing in sharpie, cleaning it up, adding benday dotsdays four and five: wrapping it upART 8 is going back to traditional materials for our next creation! We will be playing Picasso with our Cubist Self Portraits. Pablo Picasso is known to many as the most famous of all Cubists. Picasso was greatly known and recognized for his 2-dimensional, geometric representations of people. Cubists took the "rules" of art in the early 1900s and threw them out the window. Their lack of volume, colorful palettes and multiple vantage points created visually stunning pieces. Cubists focused on the geometric shapes of a person, rather than portraying them realistically. Students in ART 8 will learn about the main characteristics of Cubism, play a Roll-A-Picasso game to get them into the Cubist mind frame and then move onto drawing portraits of their partners and then, finally, of themselves. final self portraitsself portrait practice sketchesStudents had to create 2 different self portrait practice sketches and analyze them for the best features of each before getting the final paper to lightly sketch their final portrait onto. partner portraitsplaying roll-a-picasso!Lichtenstein and Pop Art go hand in hand.
